স্বাধীনতার পর ১৯৭২ সালের ৪ মার্চ বাংলাদেশ সরকার সদ্য স্বাধীন রাষ্ট্রের মুদ্রার নাম রাখে টাকা। বাংলাদেশি টাকার ব্যাংক কোড হলো বিডিটি (BDT)। বাংলায় একে সংক্ষেপে বা প্রতীক হিসেবে লেখা হয় ৳। ১৯৭২ সালে প্রথম কোষাগার নোট বের করা হয় ১ টাকার নোট। বাংলাদেশের প্রথম মুদ্রার ডিজাইন করেন কাজী গোলাম মুস্তফা।
