常陸國總社宮例大祭（石岡のおまつり）

「石岡のおまつり」は正式には「常陸國總社宮例大祭」といい、創建千年を誇る古社・常陸國總社宮の最も重要なおまつりです。

　例大祭は近世以降に様々な要素が加わり、今日まで発展してきました。
延享年間（1744～47）に奉納相撲が始まり、地域経済が急速に繁栄した明治時代前半に、豪華な出し物が街なかを練り歩く、現在の基礎が固まりました。

　石岡のおまつりは、「正月やお盆には帰省しなくても、おまつりには帰る」と言われるほど、出身者にとっては思い入れのある祭りで、石岡市民にとって、1年間でもっとも熱くなる日です。 　
　なお、歴史的な研究、学術的な調査研究内容は、櫻井明氏「常府 石岡の歴史」（1977年、石岡市教委刊）所収に詳述されています。 　

「関東の三大祭」については諸説ありますが、前述の「常府 石岡の歴史」によれば、1950年代初頭からうたわれ始め、かつて霞ヶ浦の水運で結びついていた千葉県香取市（旧佐原市）の「佐原囃子」、常陸国と武蔵国のつながりから武蔵府中の「大国魂神社」（東京都府中市）で行われている「府中暗闇祭」とあわせて、「関東の三大祭」と呼ばれるようになったとされています。

　The Ishioka Festival is officially called "Hitachinokuni Soshagu Festival," and is the most important festival of Hitachinokuni Soshagu, an ancient shrine that boasts a thousand years of history.

　The festival has developed over the course of the modern era with the addition of various elements.
The foundation of the present festival was laid in the first half of the Meiji period (1868-1912), when the local economy rapidly prospered.

　The Ishioka Festival is so dear to the people who hail from Ishioka that they say, "I don't go home for New Year's or Obon, but I go home for the Festival," and for the citizens of Ishioka, it is the most exciting day of the year. 　
　The historical and academic research on the festival is described in detail in "History of Ishioka, Jofu" by Akira Sakurai (1977, Ishioka City Board of Education). 　

According to the aforementioned "History of Jofu Ishioka," the "three major festivals in Kanto" have been held since the early 1950s, and they include "Sawara-bayashi" in Katori City (formerly Sawara City), Chiba Prefecture, which was once linked by water transportation in Kasumigaura, "Fuchu-damihayashi" at "Okunitama Shrine" in Musashi Fuchu City, Tokyo, which is connected to the country of Tokoriku and Musashi, and "Fuchu-damihayashi" in Fuchu City, Tokyo. The "Fuchu Darkness Festival" held at Fuchu Shrine in Fuchu City, Tokyo, is said to have come to be known as one of the "three major festivals in the Kanto region.
