Financial risks and insecurity have escalated and are affecting many more people since the David Hume Institute first published The Great Risk Transfer: have we got the balance right? in partnership with the Institute and Faculty of Actuaries.

This event hosted by the University of Edinburgh Business School considered whether exposing people to greater financial risk is undermining the work of building a healthy, more sustainable economy.

The research reveals what Scotland’s people feel about the shift in the balance of risk from institutions, such as employers and the State, to individuals. From managing pensions to insurance and housing.

This discussion provides a chance to reflect on the research, to hear about and help shape the next stage of this important work and to consider how beneficial the concept of "individual choice" is when managing complex financial risks without the advantage of expert knowledge.

Lead researcher, Shelagh Young will present the findings and will be joined for reflections by John Taylor, past president of the Institute and Faculty of Actuaries and Dr Owen Kelly, University of Edinburgh Business School.
