In April 2018, Advance Rehab Centre established a team of Occupational Therapists to assist NDIS participants to explore their eligibility for Special Disability Accommodation (SDA). SDA is a new funding under the NDIS to support people with extreme functional impairment or a very high need for 1:1 support and who need an SDA response to have a purpose built accommodation.

Over 18 months, our team has grown to 5 specialist SDA OTs, led by Jo-anne Bennett, and they have now assisted over 160 individuals with SDA eligibility and worked intensively to get the assistive technology and home automation required to transition into their own independent living units.

On Monday we were at the launch of the SDA Apartments in Guildford, which were opened by the Minister for NDIS, Hon Stuart Robert. The team were instrumental in helping 12 of the 16 people to access SDA eligibility. Six of which have moved from Nursing home accommodation to their own 2 and 3 bed apartments.

We are now carrying out an MDT capacity building program on site in one of the first new high physical support apartment complexes to help participants realise their goals.
