Known locally as the "Blue Route", the Mid-County Expressway serves Philadelphia's western suburbs and as a bypass for thru traffic around the metro area. The route was metro Philadelphia's last completed highway project when it was fully opened in 1992, after over 50 years of planning and construction.

The Northeast Extension of the Pennsylvania Turnpike links metro Philadelphia with Allentown, the Lehigh Valley, and Scranton/Wilkes-Barre as the major north-south corridor through eastern Pennsylvania.
