We are going to show you how to use silicone sealant to make a mold and
We are casting the skull we made in the previous video and we need to show you how easy it can be to make a mold and make multiple copies of your artwork!
Lets go through some of the steps below.

Steps:

Place sculpture on level table, a table that you do not mind getting messy

Lay down thin layer of silicone ( this step is not necessary but allows high fidelity molds) i use a lighter to remove air bubbles

Mix bathroom sealant and cornstarch, 8-1 ratio- ie 8 tablespoons of sealant to 1 tablespoon of cornstarch, more starch makes it cure faster if you would like that.

Vaseline, or baby oil your hands to stop sealant sticking to you.
Wear a mask and go outside, bathroom sealant whilst degassing has a very strong vinegar smell and is not good for you. once cured the smell subsides and dissipates.

Smoosh on your sculpture, smooshing out air bubbles allows the silicone to get in all the nooks.

Build up layers of silicone sealant so there is a thick surface

Smooth out the silicone with Vaseline or baby oil to make an even surface.
once cured remove from the top of the sculpture carefully and demold your sculpture, your sculpture may fall to bits inside, but fear not, as we have a mold of it to make multiple copies!

Mix a plaster of paris mixture and pour in the empty mold.( i mix in iron powder to give a rusted patina finish when pulled out of the mold)

Let it sit for a few hours.

Remove the cast from the mould

I then use a rust patina acid to speed up the rust process, vinegar may help speed it up instead, or leave somewhere damp and it should rust if you used iron powder in the cast

Voila- easy, cheap mold that you can reuse, and you could even make chocolate skulls in this mold if you wanted to, as the first layer of silicone is food safe.

Materials used:

-Oil based clay ( i use monster clay)

-Wooden plank/or round MDF or something flat for the sculpt to sit on

-Silicone ( yes it is expensive if you buy 1 kg, but this method we are going to show you, helps stretch out the amount you need making it much cheaper over several molds, and if you do not want a high fidelity sculpt, you do not have to use it)
Here is what i use for silicone: in the USA you may have a cheaper Smooth On alternative.

Bathroom silicone - This is the cheap silicone alternative make sure it states acetic cure.IMPORTANT do not use neutral cure with this method it may not work
