This is an exercise from my Berklee course - double pedal integration

“Weckling That” - This exercise is on page 23 from the Berklee Press Book:

Double Bass Integration – For The Jazz Fusion Drummer
Available on Amazon:

This is a very cool double bass etude. Like many others in this Berklee course/book, this is a complete drum set musical composition. It is fully notated (except for the improvised solo over the second time through the A section on measure 13.)

The form is Intro/ AA-BB CC- AA -solo-AA solo and D
This exercise has many coordination development benefits, not only for the feet but also for the hands!

For the most part the feet is playing in 16th notes. I am playing a polyrhythm because the foot combination is LRRL-RRLR-RLRR - so the hi-hat played simultaneously with the left bass drum pedal, is accenting every 3 notes out of every 16th note causing a 4-over 3 polyrhythm.

Section C is a bit challenging as we play a Mambo pattern over all this stuff. D presents a little bit of a “melody” on the tom toms, and floor tom. And right before that I am playing a solo over A, trading 8s.

This tales a minute to learn but once you memorize it is supper fun.
Lots of cool stickings, paradiddle like things in here. It is also a great feet workout, coordination workout, phrasing workout and FUN!
