Everything You Need to Know About Acquiring Japanese Citizenship!

Naturalization in Japan consists of three types, namely,
・Ordinary Naturalization for the general working visa holders which includes non-married foreigners and also those who are married to another foreigner;
・Simplified Naturalization for those who are married to a Japanese national, Koreans in Japan and special permanent residents; and
・“Great Naturalization” for those with a proven track record in sports, science and such.
In today’s video, I will be discussing about ordinary naturalization applications, explaining to you in-depth about each of the conditions, documents required, processing time, approval rate and more so please watch until the end!

One of the basic conditions of the Nationality Law, which states, "Continuous residence in Japan for five years or more." has several interpretations across the net from different immigration lawyers on whether residency under the "student visa" counts or not. We have consulted with 2 immigration lawyers (one law office has over 11 years of experience!) who later confirmed the inclusion.

Please go to your nearest "法務局（ほうむきょく）or Bureau of Legal Affairs that has a Nationality Division on the jurisdiction you live. You can check by clicking on the Excel file posted on the link below (site is in Japanese):
