Inspiration comes from many places - this one from Gokumen Altunas.
I made a simple doweling jig you can easily self-center on a piece of wood and accurately drill a hole in. You can find all the measurements in the video or in the description below. The dowel jig is made of ⌀6 dowels using ⌀8 spacers.

The doweling jig is adjustable using parallel links and you can use it for drilling holes in wood pieces of different sizes. It is very important to make the links as parallel as possible for better accuracy of the jig. Do not tighten the screws completely and leave space for fine-tuning to reach the best accuracy - tighten afterward. The dowel jig is quite simple to make and it will help you with many projects.
