The new Subaru AWD XV, now rebranded as the Crosstrek, builds on its predecessor's legacy while incorporating some welcome updates. With a starting price of $34,990 before on-road costs, the Crosstrek offers a solid value proposition for those seeking a capable and reliable compact SUV. Our test model, the mid-spec 2.0R, is priced at $38,490 and includes a host of standard features that enhance its appeal.

Under the hood, the Crosstrek retains the same powertrains as the XV, including a 2.0-litre four-cylinder naturally aspirated petrol engine producing 115kW and 196Nm of torque. This engine, while adequate for everyday driving, can feel somewhat underpowered, particularly during acceleration and when climbing hills. The combination of engine noise and the continuously variable transmission (CVT) is not the most pleasant, but it is manageable. Fuel consumption during our test averaged 9.7 litres per 100 kilometres, higher than the official 7.2L/100km combined cycle claim.

One of the standout features of the Crosstrek is its all-wheel drive (AWD) system, which provides excellent traction and stability, particularly in wet and slippery conditions. This feature alone can instill confidence in drivers navigating challenging weather or road conditions, a hallmark of Subaru vehicles.

The Crosstrek's interior is a blend of functionality and modern technology. Standard equipment in the 2.0R includes 18-inch alloy wheels, self-levelling, steering-responsive auto LED headlights, power-folding and heated door mirrors, roof rails, front LED fog lights, and an auto-dimming rearview mirror. The interior features a leather steering wheel and gear shifter, heated front seats, premium cloth upholstery, sports pedals, and a 10-way power-adjustable driver’s seat.

Tech enthusiasts will appreciate the 11.6-inch tablet-like multimedia display, which supports wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, ensuring seamless smartphone integration. Additionally, the vehicle is equipped with wireless charging, USB-A and USB-C ports (including in the rear), and a six-speaker audio system, catering to the needs of modern drivers and passengers alike.

The Crosstrek range also includes two hybrid models - the L and S grades, which come at a premium of $3600 over their petrol counterparts. These models aim to offer improved fuel efficiency and lower emissions, appealing to environmentally conscious buyers.

In summary, the new Subaru AWD XV, now known as the Crosstrek, continues to deliver the brand's renowned reliability and capability, particularly with its AWD system. While the powertrain may not be the most exhilarating, the vehicle makes up for it with a well-appointed interior, advanced technology, and solid build quality. For those seeking a versatile compact SUV with excellent traction and modern amenities, the Crosstrek is certainly worth considering.
