From 1960 until 1968, The Andy Griffith Show showcased small-town life in the fictional burg of Mayberry, North Carolina. Starring Andy Griffith as Sheriff Andy Taylor, Don Knotts as Deputy Barney Fife, and a young Ron Howard as Griffith's son, Opie.

Plot 🎥

Widower sheriff Andy Taylor invites his aunt, Bee Taylor, to move in with him to help take care of his son Opie, after his housekeeper leaves to get married. Mayberry is a nice little town, not far from big city Raleigh. Andy and cousin Deputy Barney Fife have various love interests throughout the series. The most endearing thing about this series is the loving relationship between Andy and his son Opie. It's a "feel good" series that's been enjoyed for decades by all ages.

1. Opening credits

The rock that splashes into the lake in the opening credits was thrown by a prop man, not an actor.

2. A real-life friendship

Griffith and Knotts played best pals onscreen, but the two were actually friends in real life. They met as co-stars on the set of 1958's No Time for Sergeants and stayed friends for the rest of their lives. In fact, Griffith was present with Knotts when he died in February of 2006. Griffith himself died in 2012.

3. Don Knotts' contract

Don Knotts only had a contract for one episode. He quit the show after five seasons when he was denied an ownership stake.

4. Andy and Aneta's affair

Aneta Corsaut (Helen) and Andy Griffith had an affair while filming the show, which was an open secret among the cast and crew.

5. Andy Griffith's ownership

Andy Griffith owned 50% of the show and made most of the profits.

6. ANDY HAD TO GET ALL OF THE BEST JOKES ON THE SHOW

The original idea of the show would include that Andy would always have the best punchlines. However, after the first bunch of episodes, the producers realized that Barney could very well be portrayed as a better comic relief for the show. Thus, they changed the show to make Andy the “setup man” and Barney the “funny man.”
