The top of the building was visible from afar, with a massive radio room and an observation post occupying the upper floors of "the Mushroom," as locals called Beta Hub. Ironically, the refuge for those who survived the nuclear bombardment, mostly miners, was also a mushroom, but not a nuclear one. It was crafted from lead alloys, polymers, ceramics, and many other achievements of human engineering, designed to withstand a similar threat again if needed. At least, that's what the inhabitants of this place claimed. What else could they do? Though, given the first opportunity, any of them would trade their place in Beta for a tent in the woods, even alongside fierce predators in any backwater, "just to avoid war." After all, more than anything, just as thousands of years ago, "people" continued to fear themselves, even in such remote outposts of the cosmic federation as Orion Prime. Humanity tried to escape to distant worlds, attempting to ignore the sticky, bloody trail that followed them like a shadow on a sunny day, relentlessly pursuing them, being the very essence of this troubled species.
