While most vanilla extract is naturally gluten free making Homemade Vanilla Extract offers a few benefits in addition to being gluten free.
Here are a few things to note about Homemade Vanilla Extract vs Store Bought Pure or Imitation
Imitation Vanilla Extract- It is typically gluten free but it usually contains a caramel color dye to make it brown. If you avoid dyes in your diet, homemade vanilla extract is dye free.
Homemade Vanilla Extract is more affordable – Pure Vanilla extract can be expensive in the grocery stores for a small amount. While vanilla beans can cost up to a few dollars each, using inexpensive vodka for the extract brings the DIY version to a very affordable value.
You control the alcohol used in Homemade Extract – While this recipe uses vodka, rum or bourbon can be used to make vanilla extract as well.
Use Cheap Vodka (or other alcohol) – Expensive vodka is not necessary for making vanilla extract. The cheap stuff works great for this.
Time is the biggest investment in making your own vanilla extract as it takes 6-8 weeks before the flavor develops and it is able to be used in all of your favorite recipes.
