Toor dal, is a staple in Indian cuisine, known for its nutty flavor and rich protein content. Here's a basic description of how to prepare it:

Ingredients:
1 cup toor dal
3 cups water
1 tablespoon oil or ghee
1 teaspoon mustard seeds
1 teaspoon cumin seeds
1-2 dried red chilies
1/2 teaspoon turmeric powder
1 teaspoon salt (adjust to taste)
1 chopped onion
1 chopped tomato
curry leaves
cilantro (Coriander)


Preparation:

Rinse and Soak: Rinse the toor dal under cold water until the water runs clear. Soak the dal in water for about 10-15 minutes to reduce cooking time and improve texture.

Cook the Dal: Drain the soaked dal and place it in a pot with 3 cups of fresh water. Bring it to a boil, then reduce the heat to a simmer and cook covered for 20-25 minutes, or until the dal is tender and mushy. Alternatively, use a pressure cooker for faster results, cooking for about 5-7 minutes under pressure.

Tempering: In a separate pan, heat oil or ghee over medium heat. Add mustard seeds and let them crackle. Add cumin seeds, dried red chilies, garlic , Green chilly , hing & curry leaves add chopped onions and tomatoes. Sauté until the onions are translucent and tomatoes are softened.
Combine and Simmer: Add Salt , turmeric powder and red chilly powder to the tempered mixture, then pour this over the cooked dal. Stir well and simmer for another 5-10 minutes to blend the flavors.
Garnish and Serve: Finish with fresh cilantro leaves if desired.

Serve hot with rice or roti.
