The city is situated on the northern coast of the island of Java and is the economic and political center of the country. Jakarta is home to numerous attractions, including historical sites, cultural landmarks, and modern shopping malls. During the Dutch colonial period, Jakarta was known as Batavia, and it became Djakarta during the Japanese occupation of WW2 and the modern period.
