West Sumatra (Sumatera Barat) – the Land of the Minangkabau – was THE discovery of the year. I have traveled much, but since my visit to Bangladesh, I have not come accross any place that was so raw! Bukittinggi is so rich in culture and at the same time very underrated. Yet, it is truly wonderful Indonesia! The best thing: there are barely any tourists.
Because Bukittinggi is yet not very touristy, it remains relatively cheap. I have spent only 150 SGD in 4 days (450 MYR or 110 USD). This included the hotels, food, national park and island entrance feed, as well as the daily costs of 550’000 IDR (38 USD) for the driver.
The best things that you can do around Bukittinggi are visiting the Rumah Gadang Minangkabau, Istano Basa Pagaruyung, Sianok Valley (ngarai sianok), Anai Waterfall, Japanese Tunnel, Lake Maninjau, Jam Gadang and the Jambatan Limpapeh. There is surely a lot more to discover, this for another trip! For sure I will travel there again!
