IN THE FALL of 1595, a Spanish galleon sank off the coast of what is now Marin County, California. The ship, was the San Agustin, and it's sinking, just north of the yet to be discovered San Francisco Bay, is the oldest known shipwreck on the west coast of the United States. More than 70 men were stranded in an unfamiliar land, when the Manila Galleon went down in the bay at Punta de los Reyes.
With little more than the clothes on their back, Captain, Sebastian Rodriguez Cermeno, piloted the surviving crew more than 1500 miles back to New Spain, using a small sailing launch the galleon had carried with her for exploration ..and live to tell the tale. This is the story of their journey.

The 250-year history of the Manila Galleons and the important role they served in the expansion of world commerce is surprisingly under told. With the sinking of the San Agustin, near Point Reyes, California in 1595, a piece of that history remains right off the US west coast. "The San Agustin : California Shipwreck", is the first documentary solely dedicated to telling this story.

This half-hour historical #documentary was produced, in association with the Non-Profit Marin History Museum located in San Rafael, California, by Thelen Creative. The project was targeted for Public Television broadcast (airing on the nations largest #PBS affiliate) and is available to educators, museums and historical entities; including Point Reyes National Seashore & Visitors Center, San Francisco Maritime Museum, California Historical Society, Maritime Museum of San Diego and the Marin History Museum.
