Areas of Focus For Speech #3
Demonstration or “How-To” Speech

Three Areas Of Focus
Once you have done your Brainstorming, Subject Selection and have decided upon a process to demonstrate, and you move into the Content Development step of the Speech Prep Process, you should design a hypothetical scenario that could come up in the everyday lives of any of your audience members in which your process solves a problem. Your process should solve a problem in ONE of three areas of focus. That is, your process should, in some specific way that you specify in the presentation:
• Save us time/Be convenient
• Save us money (significant amount)
• Enhance our enjoyment of life in some small but specific way that you devise and demonstrate in the presentation

You should decide which of the above three areas of focus your process best fits under for the purposes of your speech. Although you may be able to fit it under more than one, you should pick one area of focus and forget about the other two. Don’t’ split your focus.

I recommend you demonstrate a simple, physical process that you are already good at which fits into the third area of focus (Enhances our enjoyment of life…). You do not have to develop your content in this way; I merely suggest it here as the most straightforward way to do the assignment.
