"Painting embodies the warmth of one’s emotions," says artist Sun Xun, demonstrating his unique painting technique in settings that have personal resonance for him. From his Beijing studio, the artist explains his use of both historical and fantastical imagery in "Mythological Time" (2016), an animated video installation that references the coal mining industry in his hometown of Fuxin, China.

"Mythological Time" was commissioned for the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum’s permanent collection as part of The Robert H. N. Ho Family Foundation Chinese Art Initiative. The second exhibition of the initiative, "Tales of Our Time," was on view at the museum November 4, 2016–March 10, 2017.
