Rich Simon, our beloved editor of Psychotherapy Networker magazine, died on November 10, 2020. His vision over the last 45 years has had a profound impact on therapists and the psychotherapy community around the world. He'll forever remain in our hearts.

Rick Hanson asked me this morning, "Zach, what sets Networker apart from the others?"

I said, "We're a family, and we take care of each other."

Many things will be said about Rich and what he did for psychotherapy. But for me, what surpasses them all, is that he made sure our community knew we all had a seat at the table.

He was a shepherd of our field, reminding us that there was something beneath all our approaches that bound us together, and he was relentless in calling us back to that foundation, and stimulated real conversations and challenged our assumptions, rather than simply peddling the latest trends.

The day psychotherapists lose that sense of family and community, our ability to have deep and difficult conversations with one another, when we stop taking "care of the caretakers," as Rich would say, is the day we lose our way.

Rich was our greatest mentor. For as long as we have the ability, our beautiful Networker team will protect our therapeutic community's sense of family and togetherness. Not simply through pretending we all get along (we don't), but through creating real conversations that get to the heart of who we are and what we do.

The conversation will continue at Networker in the spirit of Rich Simon. And all members of this family are welcome to the table.

Please enjoy this tribute video we made to Rich this weekend as we pored over his old tapes. It's not complete or official, but it was what we could do for him in this moment of grieving.
