Gioachino Greco was an Italian chess player and writer from the earlier seventeenth century. He recorded some of the earliest chess games known in their entirety. The Latvian Gambit or Greco Countergambit is one of the oldest chess openings. It has the appearance of a King's Gambit with colours reversed and is an aggressive but objectively dubious opening for Black which often leads to wild and tricky positions.
