A rare opportunity to watch a mishoon (a traditional Wampanoag dugout canoe) in the making. This authentic mishoon was crafted by Darius Coombs from the Mashpee Wampanoag Tribe for the NHA. Coombs takes us through the process of building this dugout from start to finish to its launch on Mashpee waters. The vessel will become a permanent part of the NHA collections on Nantucket and will be featured during Nantucket Race Week 2022.

Darius Coombs is a Mashpee Wampanoag tribal member and is the Cultural Outreach Coordinator for the Mashpee Wampanoag Education Department. For over 35 years Mr. Coombs has been teaching about the traditions of Wampanoag and other Indigenous cultures in the history of the northeast. He has taught at conferences, colleges, historical societies, museums, indigenous institutes, and all grades and levels of learning.
