Frank Shorter is considered to be one of the greatest marathoners ever for the United States. In 1972, Shorter famously won the gold medal at the Munich Olympics, breaking a 64 year drought in the event. In 1976 Montreal Olympics, Shorter was able to bring home a silver medal in the marathon, making him the first United States athlete in history to win 2 separate Olympic Medals in 2 separate Olympic Marathons.

Shorter was one of the premier distance runners in the 1970s, and he, along with Steve Prefontaine, is largely credited with bringing distance running to the mainstream.
