The Khunjerab Pass is located in Taxkurgan Tajik Autonomous County in the southwest of Kashgar Prefecture, Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, and belongs to the Karakoram Mountains of the Pamir Plateau. It is 5,100 meters above sea level, surrounded by high mountains and snow all year round. It is the highest national gate in the world.
The Khunjerab Pass is the only land port established by China with the Islamic Republic of Pakistan. Its counterpart is the Sust Pass in Gilgit-Baltistan, Pakistan.
The scenery of Khunjerab is magnificent, but due to the harsh environment, it is known as the Death Valley. The local residents are mainly Tajiks.
