"Perhaps this challenge will constitute the positive side of the game for especially qualified men, given that game must be accepted and played out anyway. The preponderance of the negative part, of pure destruction, may be frightening, infernal. But no other choice is given to modern man since he himself is the sole author of the destiny and the aspect which he is now starting to see."
Julius Evola

'The Decline of Heroism' is a thought-provoking article which delves into the transformation of the concept of heroism in modern society. In this piece, Evola reflects on the all-too pertinent distinction between traditional heroic ideals and the diluted manifestations of heroism in contemporary culture, which he argues are a result of modernity's flavouring of spiritual decay and vapid, materialistic orientation.

Evola portrays the traditional hero as a man who transcends personal interests and fears, embodying virtues such as bravery, higher reason, and an unwavering commitment to higher spiritual and sociopolitical ideals. This variant of what may be described as the Absolute Man, according to Evola, is conspicuously moribund within the confines of modernity, replaced by a pallid, superficial, and ultimately trivial incarnation of heroism that aligns with commercial, democratic, and mundane values.

In this video, I narrate Evola's article while incorporating my own video footage and musical compositions to capture the essence of true heroism and its decline in the face of modernity's challenges. The visuals are crafted to reflect the heroic journey towards inner sovereignty and the tragic descent into mediocrity and conformity, mirroring Evola’s critique of contemporary society's failure to cultivate genuinely heroic (and, above all, transcendent) values. The footage was shot on a very warm day in Snowdonia, UK. This is the translation extracted from Evola's highly accessible collection of essays, "Metaphysics of War", first published by Arktos in 2007.
