Citizens Bank is building a completely new business around tech startups with Citizens Private Bank, and Sam Heshmati and Roberto Rivera made the case that they can provide that same suite of services as they did at First Republic, leading with personal relationships.

Relationship banking, in fact, was a key theme of the day. Heshmati and Rivera, as well as Matt Trotter of Stifel — which is also seizing the moment to build a new Silicon Valley practice — argued that it’s just as important as ever. The old SVB model of getting to know entrepreneurs at the start and then providing a full range of both personal and business banking services as they grow will also be the new model, albeit with different names on the door, they argued.
