Catan was a true family affair, with Teuber’s wife and sons actively involved in playtesting and refining the game mechanics.

“We would all get together at the dining room table and would test and assess games,” recounts Guido Teuber, Klaus’s eldest son.

The game's initial release in Germany in 1994 was met with immediate acclaim, earning the prestigious Spiel des Jahres (Game of the Year) award. This success catapulted Catan onto the international stage, selling over 32 million copies in 40 languages by 2020.

IV. The Catan Universe Expands

The success of Catan spawned numerous expansions, spin-offs, and even video game adaptations.

Expansions: Seafarers, Cities and Knights, Traders & Barbarians introduce new gameplay elements, increasing complexity and replayability.

As Teuber himself reflects:

“It was my wish to have a very peaceful game, with a lot of interaction bringing people together… For me, Catan was a success.”
