A prison, a fortress, a monastery.
An island of mystery and secrets, with a dark and fascinating past.

Spike Island has quickly become one of my favourite places ever, it inspired me to film this mini documentary way before I paid my visit.
The conclusion was quite important, almost heavy - History is quite palpable in Spike Island and I felt both lucky for the amazing experience and grateful for this memento of what it was and what should never be again.

From the top of the hill I looked around me and saw beautiful Cobh on one side, colorful sailboats navigating at slow pace on a sunny Sunday right where the sea gets wider, kids running around with their 99s. The contrast with the dark and narrow punishment blocks right behind me was both disturbing and intriguing at the same time.

This documentary starts in Cobh, from the moment we hopped on a ferry to Spike Island to my tour with Ailbe Ryan, the best guide I could possibly wish for.
Here’s what you’ll see:
A fascinating journey in time through tunnels and old punishment blocks.
Beautiful scenery from Cobh and Spike Island.
Detailed stories about Spike Island, magisterially told by Ailbe Ryan.
Real cells used centuries ago, now turned into a museum.

Spike Island has been names as Europe’s best tourist attraction in 2017 and ITTA’s best attraction in 2019.

This island should be on your travel list, it’s just too good to skip.
