Spoilers! I loved the show way back when and finally got around to reading the book. Let's just say, if you're having Leftovers, the television series is a far more satisfying meal (imho).

The book is literary fiction, a lot of telling over showing, while the television adaptation necessarily had to show rather than tell. Also, the show skewed slightly genre (dystopian, sci-fi) versus the book not being at all interested in those aspects.
