July 14th in the lunar calendar, which means it’s Yu Lan Festival, otherwise known as the Hungry Ghost Festival. We’re now going to learn about the related festivities which are rich in traditional Taoist characteristics. What is the significance behind the various rituals such as burning the effigies of the Ghost King and the Judges of the Underworld, as well as breaking the gates of hell?
