Some controllers require hall sensors on a brushless motor. They are glued in the gaps of the stator. The position has to be choosen properly, depending on the winding pattern! So no general recipe here. Pull up resistors and blocking capacitors are requiered, according to the data sheet. Here I have been using TLE 4935. For testing use a 2-channel oszilloscope and compare the Back EMF with the hall sensor signal. They have to be in the same phase position.
