Set in beautiful Wealden countryside on the outskirts of Northiam, East Sussex, the celebrated English garden at Great Dixter offers six acres of outdoor rooms and meadows which surround the extended late 15th century timbered manor. Expansion of the house began in 1910 under the supervision of influential English architect Sir Edwin Lutyens who also designed the garden. Lutyens was commissioned by Nathaniel Lloyd, who moved to the property with his wife Daisy (née Field), seeking to create their dream home and garden in the Arts and Crafts style and spirit. Their son, the celebrated gardener and author Christopher Lloyd (1921 - 2006) brought an age of ceaseless experimentation and juxtaposition to the garden, in tandem with the vision of his head gardener Fergus Garrett, who remains custodian of the ever-evolving landscape today.
