A fantastic early weapon you really want to get in Final Fantasy 9 is the Mythril Dagger for Zidane. This is because it comes with the useful Bandit ability - which boosts your steal success chance! Since you ideally want to be stealing all the time (for a big boost to the Thievery skill which we get later), it only makes sense to get this weapon asap.

Unfortunately, in order to do so, we have to steal from a tough enemy in a solo battle! The Black Waltz 1 boss fight also includes the Sealion foe and this is the one that holds the Mythril Dagger. Having a low level Zidane can potentially make this battle a nightmare, since the dagger can take many steal attempts to get, and much of your time is also spent having to heal low HP. By bringing Zidane into the fight at four to five levels higher, it might still take a while to steal the item - but at least you won't get a game over trying to do so!
