Florence Awor Omiya is 40-years mother of 5. Awor had numerous jobs in different fields such librarian, data enumerator but none of them suited her interests. Fast forward, In 2019 she enrolled for mechanical engineering course in a vocational training in Eastern Uganda. She says upon her graduation, obtaining employment in garage was hard. This led her to relocate to Kampala. Awor says even in Kampala, where there are many garages, most of the garage owner did not trust women to have the required skills and hire them. In 2022, RE:BUiLD registered Awor and placed her for apprenticeship. She says the apprenticeship helped smoothened the path to hands-on training. After 3 months of the apprenticeship, Awor's supervisor decided to continue working with her. Awor says she enjoys working with vehicle engines and gearbox, and that her supervisor is well aware and assigns her tasks in that respect. Awor earns per task handled and daily basis, she is able to home at least UGX 30,000.
