At the beginning of the Ice Age, cro-magnons weren't the only hominin species around. The Denisovans populated Asia, Neanderthals tolerated the cold conditions of Europe, and the last vestiges of Homo erectus and Homo floresiensis traversed the islands of Indonesia. However, despite their previous success, all these species vanished from the archaeological record during the Ice Age.
What's clear is that our ancestors, the cro-magnons, were highly adaptable. Armed with big, creative brains and sophisticated tools, not only survived but thrived in their harsh surroundings. This adaptability was crucial, as the last 100,000 years have seen tremendous oscillations between cold and warm periods in higher latitudes, and wet and dry periods in lower latitudes.
