This is a vintage recipe for Ermine Frosting which is a cooked flour buttercream frosting. My Mom learned how to make it in the 1930's when she first learned how to cook. When I was growing up, she always made it for birthday cakes and special cakes for family occasions. Everyone loved her cakes and she was well-known for them. The original recipe called for margarine and Crisco. Over the years, we have changed the recipe to use butter instead since we no longer eat margarine or Crisco. It's not as fluffy using butter instead of margarine/shortening, but we like the flavor better and prefer to avoid the trans fats and refined seed oils.
