In order to properly acknowledge the west's role in shaping today's America, a critical chapter of frontier history must absolutely be highlighted—and we should visit our 37th state to understand it best. Nebraska is a state known for being smack dab in the middle of the nation, dominated by giant corn fields and agrarian regions which swallow up most land outside of any reasonably-sized community. It additionally oversaw the massive westward migrations of the 19th century, and acted as a vital transportation corridor upon which the legendary tales of pioneer travel were centered. Well before statehood, the Old Oregon Trail connected hopeful emigrants from what once were identified as western reaches in Missouri to a newer frontier, near the Pacific coast. To get there however, these emigrants with nothing to lose would need to risk it all, to cover over 2000 miles of ground by foot, enduring rough terrain at times and near-constant exposure to nature's unforgiving forces. Along the way, a series of naturally carved sandstone formations decorating the landscape greeted every party of overland travelers with their enormity once they had arrived in modern-day western Nebraska. Known then and now as Scott's Bluff, this sight to behold became one of the trail's most iconic and appreciated landmarks, symbolizing to the weary folk the remarkable accomplishment it was to make it through an approximate third of the total route, long beyond the point of no return.
