Contrary to widespread beliefs, schools and education in general play a vital and mostly positive role in developing students’ creativity. In a similar vein, creative thinking and behavior are critical to effective learning. This talk will summarize evidence showing how students’ creative agency—their willingness to explore unknown paths driven by creative confidence (conviction about their creativity) and creative centrality (the importance of creativity for one’s identity)—drives their learning process, school functioning, and achievement. It will highlight the opportunities and provide examples of how to strengthen students’ agency to make them effective learners.
