Since the turn of the century, amphibious carriers have gained enormous appeal, with an increasing number of nations across six continents investing in the vessels and many more expressing strong interest in possible purchases. These ships are large enough to serve as aircraft carriers in many cases for fighter jets with fixed-wing vertical landing capabilities and in other cases for attack or anti-submarine warfare helicopters. They can also serve as amphibious assault ships, designed to send marines and their vehicles to hostile shores.

These vessels don't need complicated equipment like arresting gear, catapult launch systems, or big crews, making them significantly less expensive to build and operate than conventional aircraft carriers. However, these ships cannot totally replace traditional carriers due to the somewhat more constrained capabilities of vertical landing capable jets.

Due to their capacity to quickly change duties, amphibious carriers are noticeably more adaptable than conventional aircraft carriers. They can assist offensive amphibious landings, conduct defensive anti-submarine warfare missions, or even conduct airstrikes with fixed-wing fighters. The ships are popular with major nations like China and the United States, which operate the heaviest assault carriers in the world, and with lesser powers that lack the resources or are hesitant to invest in heavier specialized aircraft carriers.
In 2019, Russia also put down two heavy attack carriers that are expected to replace the country's lone conventional carrier currently in service. This video provides a list of the top five assault carriers worldwide and an analysis of each vessel's capabilities.
