Unlike the more cinematic shows of the Golden Era like The Sopranos and Deadwood, Dexter was truly made for TV with its tune-in-next-week suspense, cheap sets, and abundance of two-dimensional supporting characters. Not that that was a bad thing. It made for a show that was delightfully light-minded considering its subject matter, and simply fun as hell to watch.

That's not to say that there wasn't depth. In this analysis, we'll pick out the weighty theme of the series and show how Dexter's slow and subtle disintegration says something definitive about human ethics. In the process, we'll prove that despite its unpopularity, the ending was meaningful and perfectly natural within the framework of the show.
