The Department of Environment, Chandigarh Administration in association with Yuvsatta (youth for peace)-NGO, FOSWAC (Federation of Sector Welfare Associations of Chandigarh) and Dev Samaj College of Education, Chandigarh, launched a unique ‘Ms. Green Chandigarh’- a month long campaign at Hotel Metro, Sector-35, Chandigarh, to recognize the women for their various green initiatives. Sh..Debendra Dalai, IFS, CCF-cum-Director, Department of Environment, UT Chandigarh graced the occasion as Chief Guest.
In his address Sh. Debendra Dalai said that being environmentally conscious about making everyday choices will — quite literally — determine our success or failure as a species. We can be more conscious about reducing pollution, protecting wildlife, conserving natural resources and taking other actions that can help slow the rate of climate change. In his remarks, he said we all can make our own contribution to make a difference. He further stated that our green initiatives can make Chandigarh as the Green Capital of the country.
Women RWA (Resident Welfare Association members) of over 70 RWA’s associated with FOSWAC participated in the endeavour. Participating in the programme Mrs. Charanjit Kaur, Assistant Professor of Dev Samaj College of Education gave a presentation on segregation, composting of household waste, the need to reduce the amount of trash we create, and to reuse or repurpose consumer goods rather than throwing them away. She said ‘we in Chandigarh produce a lot of waste and the dumping site at Daddumajra is a stark example in front of us.’ Mr. Bhupinder Singh from CREST gave a presentation on easy installation of efficient and sustainable rooftop solar solutions for homeowners. Wherein not only are their power bills reduced but people are earning from the revenue generated from solar plants.
Mr. Baljinder Singh Bittoo, Chairman, FOSWAC said that the selection criteria for Ms. Green Chandigarh will be based upon ten important points, like women with homes doing segregation of waste, composting, energy efficiency with star rating home appliances, kitchen gardening, swachata/cleanliness at home, solar systems installation, no single use plastics, further no leaky taps, pipes at home, waste water recycling, use of bicycles for small distances and those who’re growing fruits, vegetables etc. on rooftops will also be honoured.
Mr. Pramod Sharma, Coordinator of Yuvsatta informed that in days to come FOSWAC will be seeking nominations from respective RWA’s of interested women for ‘Ms. Green Chandigarh’ awards and winners will be felicitated later a state level grand finale to recognize the most environment friendly women of Chandigarh.
