As new car prices in the US and Europe soar past $40,000, car buyers in Australia are enjoying a blizzard of new, low-cost car options.

Most automakers find success in operating car factories in China, then exporting these Chinese-made vehicles to foreign markets. This has worked best of all in the case of Tesla, which dominates the EV market in Australia.

Tesla's dominance will be challenged by a score of Chinese brands over coming years. But what makes the story particularly newsworthy is that the Australian government has decided that it is in their national interest to open up the car market to any and all rivals, with obvious benefits for their car-buying public.
