Berlin was under air attack throughout the war - from the British, the Americans, and then the Russians. But there was still no question of defeat by air attack alone. It was only when the Russian armies were fighting their way through the streets that the people finally collapsed. For most Berliners, the worst suffering came when the war was over - when their city was a heap of rubble. Berlin was bombed to destruction and nearly starved. When the bombardment ceased it was occupied by its enemies. Three-quarters of the city was reduced to rubble. Today the city is divided in half - but it survives.
