日本の思想や美意識を内包する「日本庭園」。その中でも京都の庭園などは自然を再現し、思想が反映され、日本人の美に対する意識、美的感性の“自然の理”を映した芸術の一つとも言われています。その中でもビロードのような苔（コケ）が広がる苔寺は、まさに庭園を緑の絨毯のように覆いつくす苔がとても美しく、その苔の種類は100種類以上と言われています。苔の緑の景色にうっとりさせられます。今回は京都の苔寺を代表する西芳寺、三千院、祇王寺の３ヵ所を紹介します。
