Amalgam consists of around 50 percent mercury, a heavy metal that is highly toxic to humans. From next year, amalgam fillings will be banned in the EU - but for ecological reasons, not health reasons. But around a third of people in Germany still have at least one amalgam filling in their mouth. Many people ask themselves whether they should have old fillings replaced. We take a closer look at the pros and cons.
