im just letting this years seedling cuttings grow for now. my winters see temps in the 20° to 15° fahrenheit range, so i don't use winter protection. im bud selecting on my two year old pines to cut down on the branches ill have to remove from the whorl later because they're shading out the lower branches. this leaves me with a really strong leader to thicken the lower trunk and one back up sacrifice branch. i want to grow small pines, so the lower buds are important for the next section of trunk.
