The tree featured in this animation is the Directions Tree - an important tree that was torn out last year to make way for a freeway. People had been sitting in and around it to protect it for years but in the end, its cultural significance did not stand against the perceived need for a freeway to go through. There are more trees nearby that are living sacred sites for Indigenous people. The good thing is, that after everyone saw the beauty of the tree and understood it, the uproar led to the courts overruling the next round of uprootings.
