Congratulations to this year’s champion, LAFC.
The U.S Open Cup is a domestic soccer/football competition in the United States. It involves clubs from every tier of US Soccer. This is similar to the English FA Cup, Spanish Copa del Rey, German DFB-Pokal, Italian Coppa Italia, and French Coupe de France. A result is considered an upset / cupset when a club from a lower division defeats a club from a higher division.
The controversy with this year’s iteration of the tournament was that it allowed MLS to send only a few of its senior clubs with the rest being MLS Next Pro clubs. MLS should be sending all of its senior clubs to Open Cup every year with no exceptions. U.S. Open Cup matters!
