A dental implant is a screw that's embedded in the bone that acts as your root. This is a natural tooth. This is an implant. The implant is the screw but it's the crown that we see in the mouth that's supported by this screw. But the implanted screw is the basis. You have to start there. So let's talk about whether or not you're a candidate. If you've got an area or several areas in your mouth that you're missing teeth then you are a candidate for a dental implant. If your health history meets the criteria for receiving one then you are a candidate for a dental implant.
There are very few health conditions that preclude you from receiving a dental implant. However, poor hygiene, excessive smoking, and uncontrolled diabetes put you at a greater risk for them to fail. So after we've established that based on your health history you are a candidate then we're going to do a complete clinical examination. And that is an examination not just of the area where you're missing the tooth but of the entire mouth, including your tissues because healthy tissues and teeth are going to be important to support this implant. All of the pieces work together. So after that clinical exam, a complete series of x-rays will be taken to determine whether or not there's suitable bone to support the screw and to look at the condition of the teeth on either side of the space because we want there to be no decay and no disease or infection associated with those teeth in the area where we're going to support of place our implant.
Once all of that has been documented, then you're ready for the procedure. Chairside, the experience is just getting a filling. You get numb and in about 30 minutes you've got your dental implant. However, you will not have the tooth on that visit. It is important to create the stability and that the implant is allowed to heal and integrate and mesh with the bone naturally. That occurs over a four to six month period of time. In the meantime, you could wear a denture of some kind or depending on the location of the implant and its placement, nothing at all, especially in the back of the mouth. What's required of you during those four to six months? Keeping a healthy and clean environment inside the mouth. The cleaner you keep your mouth, the healthier the better this implant will heal. After the four to six month period is up, you're ready for your crown. Now we're looking good, now we're gonna get our crown and you'll be able to get your tooth, which this is and the shape will be matched and it'll just be like your natural tooth.
And just like your natural tooth, it's maintained the same way. You can eat, chew, smile, function just like a natural tooth. The maintenance of it as well in terms of cleaning, you clean and floss and brush just like it's your natural tooth and on your dental visit, your dentist or hygienist will clean that area just like they do the rest of your teeth. As long as you maintain periodic recommended appointments so that x-rays can be taken periodically to evaluate stability, this implant can last you a good 10 to 20 years. Now the big question, can I afford this? Sure you can. Dental implants average, depending on your area, between $2000 and $4000 per tooth but without a dental implant, you run the risk of losing that space, compromising your bite and the aesthetics in the entire mouth. It's always best to try to replace a missing tooth.
Another question is, will my insurance pay for a dental implant? Most insurances do cover dental implants at a percentage. They're not covered 100%. So you can seek that information out with your insurance provider.
