Colombo: A City Woven from the Threads of Empires
Colombo, Sri Lanka's bustling capital, stands today as a modern metropolis, a vibrant tapestry of cultures and influences. Yet beneath the surface of this dynamic city lies a rich history, etched in the footprints of empires that once held sway over its shores. From the ancient kingdom of Kotte to the colonial rule of the Portuguese, Dutch, and British, Colombo has witnessed the rise and fall of civilizations, each leaving their mark on its landscape and its people.

Originally known as Kolomtota, the city served as the primary port for the 15th and 16th-century Kotte kingdom. Its strategic location attracted Arab traders, who called it Kalamba. This cosmopolitan character, however, also drew the attention of the ambitious Portuguese, who landed in 1505, initiating a period of Portuguese dominance that lasted nearly 150 years.

Despite the long Portuguese presence, surprisingly little remains of this era in Colombo. While Portuguese surnames scattered throughout the telephone directory and a handful of Roman Catholic churches and seminaries offer glimpses into the past, the city's physical imprint of this period is remarkably faint.
Sri Lanka, the 'pearl of the Indian Ocean' and the 'teardrop of India,' has become our new home for a while, and we're eager to share our experiences through videos. From navigating the bustling streets in a Tuk Tuk, a great way to get around, to indulging in the vibrant street food scene, we'll be capturing it all. A must-try is the hot, spicy, and satisfying salt and pepper sweetcorn or BBQ corn, best enjoyed with a refreshing glass of orange juice spiked with black pepper. Dehiwala-Mount Lavinia, the largest suburb of Colombo, offers a glimpse into the local way of life with its rich history and diverse population. 'Short eats,' tiny, flavourful snacks readily available everywhere, are perfect for a quick bite and a great accompaniment to tea or coffee. Sri Lanka's fame extends beyond its breathtaking landscapes, boasting a rich culinary tradition steeped in history and local ingredients. Cinnamon, a spice said to have originated from Sri Lanka, is a key component in many dishes, adding a unique aroma and flavor. The island's tropical climate and varied landscapes ensure a constant supply of fresh, organically grown fruits and vegetables, highlighting the emphasis on fresh, local produce. Sri Lankans enjoy their tea with milk and sugar, while Faluda, a refreshing drink with syrup, ice cream, jelly pieces, and basil seeds, offers a sweet respite from the heat. Fruit juices are a popular choice, and Arrach, a distilled spirit, is considered a national drink by many. We're excited to explore every corner of this beautiful island, sharing our adventures and the delicious flavors of Sri Lanka with you all.
